What is a .jfif file?
Short answer: it’s a JPEG with a different extension.
JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) stores the exact same image data as a regular JPEG. The only real difference is the file extension. Windows and some browsers occasionally save downloaded images with a .jfif extension instead of .jpg.
Many apps — WhatsApp, older photo editors, printers, some websites — insist on .jpg or .jpeg. Converting the file avoids those rejections without touching the image quality.
JPG vs JPEG — which extension should I pick?
They are the same format. The shorter .jpg existed because older versions of Windows only allowed three-letter extensions. Today both are accepted everywhere.
When in doubt, choose .jpg — it is the most common extension for photo files. Use .jpeg only if a specific system explicitly asks for it.
Common pitfalls
Renaming .jfif to .jpg by hand
Just changing the extension can work in some apps, but many photo apps still refuse the file. Converting through the tool guarantees a clean JPG header.
Assuming quality will improve
JFIF is already JPEG data, so converting doesn’t add detail — it only makes the file readable by more apps.
Forgetting batch mode
If you have many JFIF attachments, upload them together. One-by-one conversion wastes time.
Losing transparency
JFIF / JPG don’t support transparent pixels. If your source has alpha (rare), use PNG instead.
